The farm-to-table movement is all about building connections between growers, and the people eating. But what is farm-to-car?
Debbie Mielewski, Senior Technical Leader of Materials Sustainability, Ford Motor Company, spearheaded the idea of using plant-based materials instead of petroleum-based plastics in new Ford vehicles.
"We were told over and over it could not be done," she says, but she knew that soy-based foam could help the environment. She and her team began developing plant-based seat foams over 15 years ago, but Mielewski's big break came in 2007.
"When oil prices spiked at over $160 a barrel, this became a very popular, desirable idea. So we went from total obscurity to being nerd rock stars."
Now, every single new Ford built in North America contains soy.
